envy, admire

这两个词都可译为“羡慕”,但含义并不相同：envy不仅含有“羡慕别人所拥有的东西或品质”的意思,而且进一步有“我也要拥有”的含义。例如：

真羡慕你!我多希望能有那么一头卷发!

［误］ How I admire you!I wish I could make my hair curl like that.

［正］ How I envy you! I wish I could make my hair curl like that.

本句所羡慕的只是那一头卷发,并不见得钦佩那个有一头卷发的人,而且明确表示“希望能有”,故用envy。
